Woodworking & crossbows
Primary-school workshop projects. The first things I designed, built, and had to explain to a teacher.
I started woodworking in primary school and, like a lot of children given access to tools, immediately began building crossbows. Stored energy, a trigger mechanism that has to hold and then release cleanly, and a frame stiff enough to take the load — it is a genuinely decent first engineering problem, even if that is not why I was doing it at the time.
Kept here for the same reason as the LEGO: this is the start of the line.
